Category reassignment (moving categories around)

This article explains how to move a category to a different place in your hierarchy by changing its parent, without deleting anything.

When you might want to reassign a category

You might use category reassignment when:
  • A category was created under the wrong parent.
  • You are reorganising your structure (for example, moving “Polo Shirts” under a new “Apparel” parent).
  • You want to turn a nested category back into a top‑level category.

How to change a category’s parent

  1. Go to the Categories page.
  2. Find the category you want to move in the table.
  3. In the row for that category, click the edit button in the Manage column to open the Edit Category screen.
  4. In the Category details section, find the parent category dropdown.
  5. Click the dropdown to open the list of available parent categories.
  6. You can click on any of the categories to assign it as a new parent.
  7. Scroll to the bottom of the page and Save/Update your changes.
After saving, the category will appear under its new parent in the structure view and anywhere else the hierarchy is shown. All products already assigned to that category stay connected; only its position in the category structure that changes.

How to remove a parent and make a category top‑level

  1. Open the Edit Category screen for the category you want to change.
  2. Click the Parent Category dropdown.
  3. Simply click on the existing parent category to unassign it and then click out of the dropdown. You should see the dropdown has the text '- - Select - -' which means no parent is selected.
  4. Save/Update your changes.
The category will now sit at the top level of your category structure, with no parent above it.
