Categories Overview
Categories are essential to your website as they help organise your products making it easily for customers to find what they are looking for quickly.
Before doing any work editing or configuring the category structure in Xada, it is important to first have an idea or strategy of your category structure, especially your top-level categories and subcategories.
Best practice for establishing your main categories (also called 'top-level' categories) would be to use a maximum of 7-8. The reason for this is to not overwhelm the user and due to the limited amount of space on the navigation menu of your website.
A tool to assist in organising your website's category structure can be found in Xada by navigating to the Categories menu and clicking on the Structure button. This view will show you all categories from your suppliers feed allowing you to decide whether you would like to borrow, rename or create certain parent and children categories.
Once you have your category structure defined, you can begin organising it in Xada.
Practical Steps
- If you want to use a category, you can simply activate it from the Category page
- If you want to use a category but want to change the name, you can click the edit button and rename the category
- If you want to introduce an entire, you can click the Create Category - see related articles below.
- If you want to reassign a category, you can edit the parent or remove the parent by editing the category
- Finally, if you want to reassign products to a new category, this can be achieved using a Category reassignment rule
Tips for planning your category structure
- As mentioned above, your website header will have a restricted amount of available space for your category names. If you plan on having a large amount of top-level categories, it would be beneficial to instead make these children categories under a new parent such as 'Categories' or 'Promotional Products' or 'Clothing & Apparel'.
- You should avoid having a category with less than 10 products assigned as it can appear less enticing to visit a category page with a small amount of categories.
